Winners of the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program were announced on Wednesday, May 4, following the 1,000 recipients already named on April 20.
Designees received a $2,500 scholarship, which they can use at any U.S. university or college, and were chosen based on a combination of the strongest achievements, skills and the likelihood of success when in college.
The scholarship winners included:
Cynthia X. Chan, Joo Suk Lee, Alex Liu and Kenton M. Rao from Bayside;
Lisa J. Mogilanski from Forest Hills;
Faheem Zaman from Jackson Heights; and
Natan Belchikov and Julia A. Kamuda from Middle Village.
Additional recipients of the scholarship will be announced on May 25 and July 11, rounding up around 7,800 finalists of the scholarship winning a combined total of nearly $35 million.
