Kids rally to end local libraries cuts

Calling these kids book worms would be a compliment.

Students from P.S. 111, P.S. 112 and Voice Charter School joined with Queens Library CEO Thomas Galante and Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer and library lovers from the Long Island City community to rally against funding cuts to city libraries on Tuesday, June 14.

“The estimated $25.3 million in funding cuts proposed by the mayor’s administration would be devastating to the public libraries that provide our communities with a wealth of services," said Van Bramer. “Public libraries improve academic performance in our schools, provide adult literacy courses and inspire young people to become lifelong readers. I applaud the efforts of these young advocates and will continue working with my colleagues to protect our libraries."

The mayor’s funding cuts would reduce library service to its lowest in the history of Queens Library. According to Galante, the cuts would shutter 14 libraries, layoff 471 staff members, close 48 libraries four or five days per week and close every library on Sundays.
