Mets take on Yankees at Citi Field in Subway Series

The New York Mets went to Texas and beat the American League West leading Rangers. Next, they headed to Detroit to take two out of three from the AL Central’s first place Tigers. Now, on their return home they have one more first place American League team to face, the New York Yankees.

In the second leg of the annual Subway Series, the Mets are set to face the streaking Yankees tonight who come into the series having won five in a row.
The Mets too have been playing their best baseball of the year having won four of five and have reached the halfway point of the season at a game over .500. And though the Amazin’s hover just one game over, they have given fans cause for optimism.
And the number one reason for that optimism is fans are watching the games through Jose Reyes-colored glasses. The dynamic shortstop leads the league in runs, hits, doubles, triples – where is on pace for the most since 1912 – and average. He is the likely NL MVP at the season’s halfway mark.
For the first time since the opening week of the season the Mets find themselves above water and a series win against their cross-town rivals will send them off to the west coast on a streak of four consecutive series wins. But maybe more importantly it will go a ways towards proving that this team has a chance to stay in it through the dog days.
Currently, the Mets are just 5.5 behind the Wild Card leading Atlanta Braves, but sit in seventh place. With just one month before the trade deadline, if the team cannot sustain their recent success they could very likely be sellers on July 31.
The Yankees took two out of three in the first series in the Bronx.
Tonight’s game matches up Ivan Nova with Jon Neise. The probable for the weekend’s games are Bartolo Colon in his first start off the disabled list versus Dillon Gee on Saturday and on Sunday Freddy Garcia faces knuckleballer R.A. Dickey.
