Social Security Office to close early

In a money-saving effort Social Security field offices will be closing their doors a half an hour earlier each day.
The change goes into effect August 15.
Social Security received nearly $1 billion less than President Barack Obama requested in the budget. Closing the offices 30 minutes early – while agency employees continue to work their regular hours – will allow them to complete face-to-face service with the visiting public without incurring the cost of overtime.
The Social Security office in Glendale recently closed, merging with the Rego Park office, one of many offices around the country forced to shut their doors due to the budget cuts.
Many Social Security services do not require a visit to an office. Anyone wishing to apply for benefits, sign up for direct deposit, replace a Medicare card, obtain a proof of income letter or issue a change of address or telephone number may do so at www.socialsecurity.gov or by calling 800-772-1213. People who are deaf or hard of hearing can call 800-325-0778.
