Cb 5 Transit Meet Eyes Cooper Ave.

Speak Out About Reconstruction

The ongoing Cooper Avenue underpass/retaining walls project will be the focus of a public session during the next meeting of Community Board 5′s Transportation and Public Transit Committees on Tuesday night, Jan. 24, at The Shops at Atlas Park in Glendale.

As announced by District Manager Gary Giordano, the meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Atlas Park’s Community Meeting Room, located on the third floor of the Market Plaza building at 8000 Cooper Ave.

Giordano explained that the public will have the chance to review and discuss the $5.7 million project, which includes the rehabilitation of the retaining walls which support the Long Island Rail Road and vehicular bridges above Cooper Avenue between 70th and 74th streets on the Glendale/Middle Village border.

The parapet walls that are on top of the retaining walls will be replaced, and the retaining walls themselves will be resurfaced. Giordano also explained that new wider sidewalks will be installed along the length of the underpass and steel bar fencing will be installed on top of the parapet walls.

The project will also include new curbing and catch basins.

Against the objections of Board 5, the city Department of Transportation (DOT) also intends to change the di- rection of 74th Street between 78th and Cooper avenues (adjacent to P.S./I.S. 119) in Glendale from a oneway southbound into a one-way northbound.

Community residents and business owners are invited to attend this meeting to learn more about the project plans, ask questions of DOT representatives and state any objections to the plans.

Following this public session, the committees will meet regarding other issues, including a review of upcoming improvements to M train stations in Ridgewood and requests for traffic safety control devices.
