Winged Fist Takes Flight In Woodside

On Saturday, Mar. 10, the corner of 43rd Street and 48th Avenue in Woodside was named “Winged Fist Way” in honor of the Irish-American Athletic Club, which once was located at the intersection. As noted, the club sent numerous athletes to the Olympic Games in the first half of the 20th century. Attending the ceremony was (from left to right in left photo) Ian McGowan, the executive director of the Winged Fist Organization; Don McCallian of the United Forties Civic Association; Board 2 Chairperson Joseph Conley (behind McCallian); Rep. Joseph Crowley; and City Council Members Jimmy Van Bramer and Daniel Dromm.
