Still-active smoke detectors left in a bag on an East Williamsburg street last Wednesday afternoon, May 30, caused a suspicious package scare that prompted a massive response by police and the Fire Department, sources said. Reportedly, the incident occurred at around 2 p.m. on Scholes Street near Humboldt Street. Members of Engine Co. 216, Ladder Co. 108, Battalion 35, the 90th Precinct, NYPD Emergency Services Unit 8 and the Bomb Squad responded to the scene after receving a call regarding a beeping sound from a black bag left on the sidewalk. Upon further investigation, police found the bag filled with old smoke detectors, including one which still had a batter and was active. (photos: Allen Epstein)
