Teen swimmer dies off coast of Rockaways

FAR ROCKAWAY — A swimmer off the beach in Far Rockaway drowned last weekend after a 40-minute search, police said.

According to the NYPD, officers responded to a call around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday near Beach 19 Street and Seagirt Boulevard for a person in the water. Upon their arrival, officers found two 14-year-old boys had been swimming in the ocean, police said.

A civilian pulled one boy out of the water, police said, and the other remained in the water unconscious. An approximately 40-minute FDNY and NYPD search and rescue operation recovered the boy’s body before he was taken to St. John’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The identification of the deceased was pending family notification at press time.
