In 2007, 12- and 13-year-old Robbie and Brittany Berquist, a brother-sister team, devised Cell Phones for Soldiers to make sure deployed soldiers could keep in touch with loved ones at home for free.
AT&T was proud to become a supporter of this organization in 2007, and since then has donated more than $4 million and helped distribute more than 600,000 prepaid calling cards to service men and women in active duty and reserve zones around the world.
But the picture is changing: Queens soldiers are coming home and they have new needs as they readjust to the lives they put on pause while protecting our freedoms.
Responding to that call, Cell Phones for Soldiers has launched a new initiative, Helping Heroes Home, and AT&T is donating more than $450,000 to help them get things going. At AT&T stores in Queens, the company will help Queens residents do their part by donating $2 when anyone watches the Helping Heroes Home video — on AT&T’s community affairs Connect for Good Web page — and $1 when each viewer shares it with a friend.
Also, in each AT&T store in Queens consumers can turn in used cellphones and phone cards with unused minutes and make donations to the program.
