CUNY law school opens in LIC

CUNY SCHOOL OF LAWw

Court Square’s judicial-themed name now seems more appropriate.

CUNY School of Law recently packed up its hefty legal books and mock gavels and left its home in Flushing, moving to a new campus at 2 Court Square in Long Island City. The school celebrated its grand re-opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 22, at which New York state Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman delivered the keynote address.

Now operating across two floors inside the LIC complex, the space adds an extra 70,000-square-feet of state-of-the-art classrooms, conference halls and faculty quarters. The new digs will also include an auditorium and a moot courtroom where soon-to-be lawyers can practice their “objection!”

Officials for the school said the move was mainly based on the area’s access to public transportation and ease of access.

“The location and accessibility improve our ability to serve historically underrepresented communities throughout the metropolitan area, including here in Queens, and our students are able to travel between classes and public interest internships across the city more easily,” said CUNY School of Law Dean Michelle J. Anderson.

According to a CUNY School of Law spokesperson, the new building – built using 90 percent post-consumer, recycled steel, is LEED Gold certified, meaning its construction had a reduced environmental impact and its design promotes occupants’ health and wellbeing. The structure also recycles rainwater and runs on wind power, making it one of the greenest law schools in the nation.
