Korean donors sought at bone marrow drive

By Joe Anuta

The Parent Teacher Association at PS 242 in Flushing is hoping donors of Korean descent will sign up at a bone marrow drive Saturday.

A sister-in-law of one of the teachers was diagnosed with leukemia, according to the PTA president at the school, and her best chance of beating the cancer is through a transplant. Since she is Korean, it is most likely that a match would be be found with a Korean donor.

The drive is set to be held Jan. 5 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at PS 242. The school is located at 29-66 137th St.

The bone marrow drive will not actually involve giving bone marrow. Instead, participants’ cheeks will be swabbed and information gleaned from that sample will be entered into the National Bone Marrow Registry.
