Just as the ball dropped at Times Square to ring in the new year, a Brooklyn woman gave birth to the first newborn in the city of 2013 at New York Hospital Queens in Flushing on Tuesday, Jan. 1. Olivia Espinal came into the world at approximately midnight Tuesday, weighing 7 lbs., 5 ozs. The proud parents are Rosemary Espinal and Freddy Pena; Rosemary Espinal noted that her daughter arrived three days before her original due date, which was Friday, Jan. 4. Hospital staff congratulated the family by presenting them with a $250 gift card and a basket of flowers.
