Fighting Co-location Plan at Newtown H.s.

During a public hearing last Wednesday, Feb. 27, a number of students, parents and teachers at Newtown High School railed against a plan to co-locate a high school for English language learners at the Elmhurst campus beginning next year. Many of the speakers told representatives of the Department of Education (DOE) in attendance that the proposal would stymie progress being made at Newtown, which was previously deemed a “persistently low achieving” school several years ago by the state Education Department. The co-location plan, as described by the DOE, would create a school for about 340 ELL students over the next four years while simultaneously dropping Newtown’s enrollment by about the same number. The DOE has indicated the plan would better address the needs of many students generally educated at Newtown who speak English as a second language. The plan will be put for a vote at the Panel for Educational Policy’s next meeting this Monday, Mar. 11, at 6 p.m. at Brooklyn Technical High School in Fort Greene.
