A D-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s Honor For Queens’ Spelling King
Giving a new meaning to the term “eating his words,” the champion of the Scripps National Spelling Bee- Arvind Mahankali of Bayside Hills-was honored on Sunday, June 9 by Rep. Grace Meng at Ben’s Best deli in Rego Park with a plateful of knaidel, the Yiddish term for matzoh ball which he correctly spelled to win the title. In honor of the National Spelling Bee champion, the deli created a special dish of min-knaidels named for him. Meng also presented Mahankali-a student at M.S. 74 in Oakland Gardens who will attend Stuyvesant High School in September-with an American flag flown over the U.S. Capitol last Wednesday, June 5. The congresswoman and Mahankali, along with Ben’s Best owner Jay Parker, are pictured with the mini-knaidels.
