City needs speed cameras

Is columnist Bob Friedrich so cynical of government as to deny the practical benefits of speed cameras (“Speed cameras feed Gotham’s revenue addiction,” Aug. 2-8)?

How often have we seen reckless drivers weaving through traffic at high speeds with no impunity? How often have we asked, “Where is the police when you need them?”

With speed cameras, there is a permanent law enforcement presence to ensure that unsafe drivers are brought to justice.

If Friedrich is unhappy with how the revenue gained by violations is being spent, my advice to him is to avoid speeding — the same way we can avoid playing the lottery if we are unhappy with how the proceeds are being spent.
