A 68-year-old woman was killed when she was struck by an SUV as she crossed Grand Avenue Saturday morning en route to Maspeth Bingo Hall, authorities and a witness said.
A spokesman for the Fire Department said emergency responders were called to the intersection with 69th Place at 10:52 a.m. and brought the senior to Elmhurst Hospital Center in serious condition.
“The lady was on her way to the bingo hall,” said 23-year-old Jose Rojas, who had been getting a haircut at a shop, which looks out onto the street. “She didn’t have time to yell because she landed straight on her back. The first thing that hit was her head onto the street.”
The NYPD said the woman, identified as Elmhurst resident Angela Hurtado, was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Police said she had been crossing Grand Avenue when she was hit by a 2002 Mitsubishi Montero SUV making a left turn from 69th Place. Only right-hand turns are permitted at the intersection, according to traffic signs in the area.
The 28-year-old driver remained at the scene after the accident and was taken into custody by officers, a spokesman for the NYPD said. Charges against him had not yet been filed as of 4 p.m., the spokesman said. An investigation into the crash was ongoing, police said.
