The Christ the King Regional High School Speech and Debate Team advanced to the state championships after taking home first place in the Student Congress. As noted, the Middle Village-based team placed five finalists in the Student Congress an received the Rev. Sean Ogle Award as the top team in Brooklyn and Queens for the 2013-14 season. Up next for the teenagers is a trip to Cooperstown for the New York State Debate Championships, which will be held on Apr. 4-5. Earning spots at the state championships are freshmen Laura Jans and Shania Figueroa (debate), sophomore Melissa Lent (speech) and juniors Stephen Lebak, Dominik Makocki and Kevin Rodriguez (congress). Lebak, Makocki and sophomore Krystle Salvati and junior Kristen Tully also qualified for the national debate championships to be held on Memorial Day weekend in Chicago.
