Putnam Avenue and Stier Place in Ridgewood became a filming set last Friday night, Apr. 11, as crews shot scenes for an upcoming episode of the HBO Prohibition-era drama Boardwalk Empire. Classic vehicles and actors dressed in period wardrobe were seen on location as the Ridgewood intersection doubled as a 1920s Chicago streetscape. Shot in and around New York from the beginning, Boardwalk Empire scenes set in Chicago were filmed around Ridgewood last year. Residents lined Putnam Avenue into the night to watch the scenes being filmed. Among the stars reportedly on location were Michael Shannon (who plays federal agent-turned-gangster Nelson Van Alden); Stephen Graham (Al Capone); Vincent Piazza (Lucky Luciano); and Shea Whigham (mobster Eli Thompson). Directed by Allen Coulter, the scene will be part of the second episode of Boardwalk Empire’s fifth and final season, which premieres this September.
