Paying Tribute to John Paul Ii In Maspeth

The legacy of Pope John Paul II was celebrated last Sunday, Apr. 6, with the renaming of 56th Road between 61st and 64th streets in Maspeth in honor of the late Holy Father and soon-to-be saint. Organized by City Council Member Elizabeth Crowley and the Polish-Jewish Dialogue Committee, the ceremony paid tribute to the former pope, who-as Cardinal Karol Wojtyla, the archibishop of Warsaw, Poland-visited Holy Cross Church on 56th Road and stayed at its rectory for several days during his 1969 visit to the U.S. Among those who participated in Sunday’s event, as pictured, included Crowley; Assemblywoman Margaret Markey; Polish Consul General Ewa Junczyk-Ziomecka; Fr. Witold Mroziewski, current Holy Cross Church pastor; Msgr. Peter Zendzian, former Holy Cross Church pastor; Frank Milzewski, downstate chair of the Polish- American Congress; and Rabbi Moshe A. Birnbaum of the Jewish Center of Kew Gardens Hills. Pope John Paul II, who died in April 2005 following nearly 27 years as leader of the Catholic Church, will be elevated to sainthood by Pope Francis during a canonization ceremony in Vatican City on Sunday, Apr. 27.
