Queens Democratic Party nominates Liu to face off against Avella

By Alex Robinson

Former city Comptroller John Liu was officially nominated Monday morning as the Queens Democratic Party’s pick to challenge state Sen. Tony Avella (D-Bayside).

The county committee voted to designate Liu as its candidate to run against the two-term senator, who recently bolted from the Democratic Party to join the Independent Democratic Conference.

Liu was not present at the county committee designation meeting to formally accept the nomination, but rumors have persisted that the former mayoral candidate would run again as he has continued to follow a busy public schedule since he left office.

The primary is in September.
