Rep. Joe Crowley announced the winner of the inaugural Veterans Day essay competition for students in the 14th Congressional District on Wednesday, Nov. 5. Kezia Dickson, an eighth grader at I.S. 61 in Corona, placed first out of more than 800 students who participated in the contest. Crowley recognized Kezia with an American flag flown over the U.S. Capitol and presented her with a statement to be entered into the Congressional Record in honor of her essay. Crowley’s essay competition was open to students in grades five to eight who live in the district. The top selections from each grade also received congressional recognition. Crowley is pictured at I.S. 61 with Principal Joseph Lisa and social studies teacher Barry Butters honoring Kezia Dickson.
