Walking across a busy street proved deadly for a 76-year-old woman who was struck and killed by a SUV in Middle Village on Wednesday afternoon, police said.
Giovanna Livolsi of 74th Street died of injuries she sustained after being hit by a 2014 Ford Escape along Metropolitan Avenue between 74th and 75th streets at 3:30 p.m.
According to police, Livolsi was attempting to cross Metropolitan Avenue in the middle of the block when she suddenly fell in front of the vehicle traveling westbound on the avenue. The vehicle reportedly ran over the fallen victim; the driver, apparently not realizing that he struck someone, continued heading west on Metropolitan Avenue until being alerted to what happened.
The driver returned to the scene and contacted 911; officers from the 104th Precinct and EMS units responded to the location. Paramedics rushed Livolsi to Elmhurst Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
No charges have been filed, and an investigation is ongoing, police said.
