A woman is recovering after falling through some thin ice while attempting to walk across the Lawrence Strack Memorial Pond in Forest Park in Woodhaven on Tuesday evening, the Fire Department reported.
According to officials, firefighters responded to a call regarding a woman — possibly in her 20s — in the pond at 5:19 p.m. on Feb. 9. It is believed that the woman walked out onto the pond’s frozen surface before it gave way, plunging her into the icy water.
The woman was rescued from the frigid water by FDNY firefighters and NYPD Emergency Services Units and was transported to Jamaica Hospital in stable condition, fire officials said.
There were initial reports of more people, possibly children, still in the pond, the FDNY said. Firefighters dove into the pond and found no others in the water.
