A block of 74th Street will be renamed to honor one of its late residents, a longtime local advocate.
Community Board 3 voted unanimously at its monthly meeting Thursday to name 74th Street between 30th Avenue and 31st Avenue as “Emma Brandt Way.”
Emma Brandt, a neighborhood advocate and a member of numerous community groups, passed away in November.
She was a longtime member of the North Queens Homeowners Civic Association and served as its president from 1987 to 1989.
She was also a member of the Jackson Heights Volunteer Ambulance Corps, the Elmhurst Hospital Advisory Board, the Jackson Heights Beautification Group and the Queens American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, where she served as a chaplain.
Former Queens Borough President Helen Marshall also named her Woman of the Year, Council Member Costa Constantinides wrote in a letter that was read at the CB 3 meeting.
CB 3 Chair Stephen Kulhanek added that Brandt was a Board member for more than 30 years.
Her daughters, Dora Codd and Debbie Brandt-Blanc, addressed the Board on Thursday.
“We want to thank you for the fact that you want to name the street she lived on after her,” Brandt-Blanc said.
Constantinides will now draft legislation that will be presented to the City Council later this year. If approved, the street will officially be co-named “Emma Brandt Way.”
