Location of sculpture

Visitors to Hunters Point South Park this summer will be able to sit in a sculpture surrounded by mist and colorful light.
“Meridian,” by artist Mika Tajima, will be installed near the ferry landing through SculptureCenter’s new art education program, Public Process.
Exact installation dates are in still in the works but it is slated to be on view from early June to September, according to SculptureCenter.
The sculpture will be a brightly colored rectangle that is sunken inside, resembling a hot tub, SculptureCenter spokesperson Ariel Hudes said. There will be benches inside, and a mist machine will spray vapor into the air. LED lights will give the mist different colors.
The colors are not randomly chosen; they will correspond to the real-time value of gold – based on an algorithm developed by Tajima – changing “second by second,” according to Hudes.
“Reflecting on the materiality of contemporary life, this object is a ghost or mirage of a familiar object—a fleeting visual trace of a material form as it fades into abstraction—into thin air,” SculptureCenter stated in a press release.
This public artwork was selected by a group of high school students who participated in Public Process, which teaches about the history and impact of public art. Three artists were invited to pitch ideas to the students, who ultimately chose Tajima’s work.
