Yet another school is planned for Hunters Point South.
TF Cornerstone will be building a 600-seat elementary school on Parcel C, announced Jimmy Van Bramer’s office today. The school will be in addition to the elementary school planned for Parcel F.
Van Bramer, at a meeting with the Gantry Parent Association in February, announced that Parcel F would include a school. Parcel F is adjacent to Newtown Creek and is expected to be completed by the end of 2020.
Facing infrastructure problems, TF Cornerstone has had to redesign Parcel C to make way for the Amtrak tunnels and power lines below the site.
“We seized the opportunity to have the new design include a school,” Van Bramer said.
Parcel C will now include the school as part of its overall plan to bring just under 1,200 apartments to the site.
“Our advocacy will end up benefiting 600 kids who will now be able to attend a brand new elementary school in Hunters Point South,” Van Bramer said. “More and more families are moving to Hunters Point, and we need schools to keep up.”
The school in the TF Cornerstone building will be paid for with funds announced in Mayor Bill de Blasio’s preliminary budget earlier this year.
