Outdoor movie screenings return to Hunters Point South Park this month, with Tom Hanks’ “Big” kicking off the series on May 19.
The Hunters Point Parks Conservancy has announced the lineup for its third season of outdoor movie screenings in the park, running on six Thursday nights along the Long Island City waterfront.
The lineup is as follows:
May 19: “Big”
June 16: “Splash”
July 14: “Spiderman”
Aug. 11: “August Rush”
Aug. 25: “Zootopia”
Sept. 15: “Ghost”
If one of the movies gets rained out, it will be rescheduled to Aug. 18.
Further details about these movies are available online here.
Movies will be shown on a 24-foot inflatable screen in the LIC Landing event space. LIC Landing will provide food and beverages for purchase during the movies.
Screenings begin at sundown.
The movie series launched with just one screening in 2014; HPPC rolled out a full program last summer.
“The crowds kept growing and it was wonderful to see how many families enjoyed our films and made the park their home for the evening,” HPPC president Rob Basch said. “We invite everyone back to the best outdoor movie location anywhere.”
The series is sponsored by the real estate company Nest Seekers and Adrian Lupu.
“We are excited to support this event that does a great job to grow our neighborhood’s potential while giving back to the many residents we have helped move to Long Island City throughout the years,” Lupu said.
The HPPC will host an event this evening, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Alewife (5-14 51st Ave.), to discuss the movie lineup and other programming events. Appetizers will be served and drink specials will be available.
