Police units rushed to St. John’s University Wednesday afternoon after receiving a 911 call about shots fired on the Jamaica campus.
The reported shooting occurred at approximately 1:25 p.m. inside the campus at 8000 Utopia Parkway in Jamaica. According to police, three men entered room 510 at Hollis Hall dormitory and attempted to rob four men inside of the room.
A shot was fired but the bullet bounced of the wall and nobody was injured.
Three individuals then fled on foot, empty-handed on 167th Street where they were arrested.
Previous reported rumors about the gun used in the robbery being a BB gun were denied by the police who confirmed it was a revolver.
Three men were charged with the following:
- Mustafa Godbolt (21) who fired from the gun was charged with robbery, burglary, reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a gun and criminal possession of a controlled substance (Xanax).
- Sutpon Tyrrel (17) was charged with robbery, burglary and criminal possession of a gun (a knife).
- Anthony Gusthas (18) was charged with robbery and burglary.
Interestingly, the last day to move out of the freshmen Hollis Hall dormitory is on Thursday, May 12, and a majority of underclassmen have moved out by the time of the shooting, a student on the campus told QNS. The 510 room where the shooting occurred is a 10-person room.
It is unclear whether the campus security was available at Hollis Hall at the time of the robbery. St. John’s representative said in a statement: “Safety is a top priority at St. John’s and, at this time, there is no continuing threat to the campus community. The University is working closely with the NYPD which is continuing its investigation at this time.”
