Police shot and killed a 28-year-old man in Springfield Gardens early Saturday morning after he was found threatening his mother with a screwdriver, according to the NYPD. Officers from the 113th Precinct answering a 911 call arrived at 137-64 Westgate Street around 3 a.m. when they heard the screams of a woman from the rear of the home.
The officers encountered the man at a small stairwell leading to a basement apartment and ordered the suspect to drop his weapon. The suspect refused, police say.
“The officers attempted to disarm the suspect and were able to free the female during the struggle,” Chief of Patrol Terence A. Monahan said. “During that struggle, officers deployed a teaser. The taser did not strike the suspect. The struggle continued to ensue with the suspect who was still armed with the weapon. During the struggle, two officers discharged one round each striking the suspect.”
Paramedics transported the man to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to Monahan. His identity was not released pending an ongoing investigation.
The two officers were not injured in the incident.
