Kundun — Musical in structure, and supported by a vibrant score by Philip Glass that reverberates with low Tibetan horns, this dreamlike, sensual study of the early life of the Dalai Lama takes place, far from director Martin Scorsese’s typical urban milieu. Lush gold and maroon hues fill the screen, in beautiful images captured by cinematographer Roger Deakins.

Jacqueline (Argentine) — A filmmaker receives a series of panicked emails and phone calls from a young French woman—Jacqueline Dumont. She implores him to travel to Argentina to document her self-imposed political exile after she supposedly leaks highly confidential government secrets detailing a planned assassination.

The Last Temptation of Christ — Scorsese’s humanistic portrayal of Jesus Christ, based on the novel by Nikos Kazantzakis, was a labor of love that was delayed when Paramount stopped pre-production and was protested by religious groups when the film was finally completed. Willem Dafoe convincingly portrays Jesus as a mortal undergoing an astonishing transformation, and Peter Gabriel’s score beautifully integrates ambient electronic tones with global music instrumentalism.

Sascha Braunig: Shivers — With more than 20 works made over the last five years, Shivers showcases Braunig’s unique approach to the studio portrait. Beginning with meticulously rendered paintings of fantastical sculptural constructions, the artist has deployed a range of pictorial techniques to depict bodies under duress.
When: Runs until March 5, 2017. The museum is open Thursday through Monday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.

NYRR Open Run: Astoria Park — Open Run is a community-based, volunteer-led running initiative bringing free weekly runs and walks to local neighborhood parks. The finish line is open until the last person is done. The courses vary based on the park, but average between 2.5 and 3 miles long. Participants are encouraged to arrive 15 minutes before the start of the run and to leave their valuables at home – bag check is not provided.
