The Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria will screen “Moonlight” for two days in March.
The movie, which after some confusion won an Academy Award for Best Picture, is a coming-of-age film based on the play “In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue” by Tarell Alvin McCraney. It follows the character Chiron as he grows up in Liberty City, FL.
“Moonlight” is the first film with an all-black cast, the first LGBT film and second-lowest grossing film to win an award for best picture. One of its stars, Mahershala Ali, won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, the first Muslim actor ever to win an Oscar.
“At once a vital portrait of contemporary African-American life and an intensely personal and poetic meditation on identity, family, friendship, love and sexuality, ‘Moonlight’ is a groundbreaking piece of cinema that reverberates with deep compassion and universal truths,” the museum’s website stated.
Screenings will take place on Saturday, March 11, at 1:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. and on Sunday, March 12 at 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
Tickets are $15 for general admission and $7 for museum members.
