Grab your bicycle and take a grand tour of Queens that ends in bustling downtown Flushing this Saturday.
The “Tour de Flushing,” a 20-mile bicycle ride, will kick off in front of the world famous Unisphere in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park and end at the old Quaker Meeting House in downtown Flushing. The July 22 event is free and open to the public.
The grand tour will explore the greatest parks, streets and spots throughout Corona, Fresh Meadows, Oakland Gardens, Bayside and Flushing. Riders will be notified about certain noteworthy landmarks along the way, including West Alley Road, a path George Washington himself traveled upon on his tour of Long Island, and the “Queens Giant” tree, the oldest living thing in New York City.
Organizers note that the ride has uphill riding and may not be suitable for small children. Bringing a helmet, spare tire and water bottle is suggested. There will be rest stops along the way.
The event is organized by the Transportation Alternatives Eastern Queens Committee, the Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce and Eastern Queens Greenway.
“Tour de Flushing” will begin at 9 a.m. and is scheduled to end at 1 p.m. Those interested in participating can register online by visiting the event page.
