A 19-year-old Long Island City man was arrested and charged Monday in the shooting death of an Astoria resident near the Ravenswood Houses in broad daylight Saturday afternoon, according to Queens District Attorney Richard Brown.

Javyn McNish, of 21st Street in Long Island City, was arraigned before Queens Criminal County Judge Danielle Hartman and ordered held without bail in the shooting death of Jarrel Lewis, 20, a resident of 12th Street in Astoria.

According to the charges, McNish was captured on surveillance video as he fatally shot the victim Jarrel Lewis in front of 14-01 36th St. just after 4 p.m. Saturday. Lewis was shot twice in the torso and once in the hand, according to the charges. EMS transported Lewis to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, according to the NYPD.

“The senseless killing of this young man is another example of why my office remains vigilant in the fight to rid Queens County of illegal firearms,” Brown said. “The defendant showed no respect for human life when he viciously shot a 20-year-old man who had a long life in front of him. He will be vigorously prosecuted.”

McNish was charged with second-degree murder and two-counts of second-degree criminal possession of weapon and ordered to return to court Dec. 18. If convicted, McNish faces up to 25 years to life in prison.
