Queens video game lovers can try their hand at “Multibowl,” a compilation of hundreds of video games released between 1976 and 2000.
The Museum of the Moving Image at 36-01 35 Ave. in Astoria began offering “Multibowl” at its Video Screening Amphitheater on Dec. 13. Creators Bennet Foddy and AP Thomson released the game last year.
In a previous interview with eurogamer.net, Foddy said he wanted to help preserve older games and also allow users to skip the tutorials and cut to the most enjoyable parts of the game.
“What if you didn’t have to go through the process of starting a game and going through the tutorial level and all of that sort of boring stuff that isn’t the fun bit of the game?” he told Eurogamer. “What if it just jumped you into the good bit? And it’s easier with multiplayer games to realize this.”
Each game chosen is a two-player game and each competitor has around 30 seconds or less to accomplish a goal before moving on to the next game. The games range from NBA Jam, which was released in 1993, to Space War (1979) and Barbie Vacation Adventures (1994).
Each game will be introduced by name, publisher, release date and objective. Foddy and Thompson said they have no plans to release the game because they want to avoid any legal trouble.
The creators have shown it at various festivals in Austin, Portland, London and Toronto. It will be on display at the Museum of Moving Image until Feb. 15.
