Students at a Jamaica Estates school took one of the country’s biggest sporting events and turned it into an opportunity to give back to their local community.
The Immaculate Conception Catholic Academy community participated in a “Souper Bowl” of their own earlier this month, collecting over 300 cans of soup and other food items for those in need. Donations were handed over to the food pantry at Immaculate Conception Church.
Those who participated in the drive had the chance to wear their favorite sports jersey for the day. Dozens of students, teachers and staff participated in the collection effort.
The drive was a part of the academy’s overarching “Missions program,” which teaches students the importance of helping others by supporting charitable organizations, including Locks of Love and Eli Manning’s Tackle Kids Cancer. Students recently participated in a fundraising dress down day to raise fund to fight pediatric cancer.
Founded in 1938, Immaculate Conception Catholic Academy educates children in pre-K through eighth grade. The school academic goal is “to educate children so that they are able to take their rightful places in a rapidly changing society.”
