Long Island City’s waterfront park will be getting a lot cleaner this summer, as the city will be installing additional trash cans at Hunters Point South Park in coming weeks.
NYC Parks will install four trash cans in about two weeks time through certain areas of the park, including along its pier fencing directly by the river, and near the sand volleyball court adjacent to LIC Landing, according to Rob Basch, President of the Hunters Point Parks Conservancy.
NYC Parks will also be revising their trash pickup schedule to help avoid too much trash-build up at the park.
Basch said the additional trash cans come after years of advocacy on behalf of the group, as well as complaints from the public on the park’s cleanliness. More trash cans, he added, are also needed to accommodate for the influx of people to the park once Phase II below 54th Avenue opens this summer.
The locations for the new trash cans were selected after the Conservancy and NYC Parks did a walk-through of the entire site.
