A Jackson Heights civic organization will host a weekend-long celebration of the neighborhood’s history as a planned garden community.
The Jackson Heights Beautification Group will host “Celebrate Historic Jackson Heights” on June 9 and 10. The group will offer tours of the neighborhood’s houses and gardens, an exhibition of photos and memorabilia and a lecture on the history of the neighborhood.
The weekend will begin on Saturday with a free lecture and exhibition at the Community Church, 81-10 35th Ave. Daniel Karatzas, author of “Jackson Heights: A Garden in the City” will present a slide show of historic photos and discuss the history of the neighborhood.
The lecture will take place from 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Photos, maps and brochures from Jackson Heights’ early years will be on display from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Attendees are also invited to take a self-guided tour through 15 private interior gardens from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Maps of the gardens are included with the purchase of a ticket, which can be purchased in advance or at the Community Church on Saturday morning. The rain date for the garden tours is June 16.
A walking tour of the historic district will assemble at the Community Church at 12 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets must be purchased or reserved in advance.
Tickets can be purchased after May 25 at Espresso 77 at 35-57 77th St, or at Beaudoin Realty Group, 78-27 37th Ave., Suite 5 on weekdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
