Despite dreary weather, residents across Queens marked Memorial Day weekend with an array of parades and vigils honoring the lives of those soldiers who paid the ultimate price to defend our country.
Community groups, active service members, veterans organizations and elected officials marched through the streets of local neighborhoods on Sunday and Monday, May 27-28, proudly waving the American flag and paying homage for the generations of Americans who fought and died to protect the republic and the freedom of its people.
Along the way, they were greeted by hundreds of flag-bearing spectators — some carrying signs showing their appreciation for the troops — who cheered on the marchers, especially those in uniform.
The biggest gathering was found in Little Neck and Douglaston; the communities’ joint parade is the largest Memorial Day parade in the country, and it brought out both Governor Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio. They joined a litany of local elected officials and dignitaries for the march along Northern Boulevard.
