Elected officials and community leaders gathered for a street co-naming Saturday to honor the late Ivan Lafayette, who represented the Jackson Heights/Woodside district in the state Assembly for more than 30 years.

Officials co-named 92nd Street between 34th Avenue and Northern Boulevard as NYS Assemblyman Ivan Lafayette Way.  Lafayette was elected to represent the 34th Assembly District in November 1976 and served until his retirement in 2008. He was succeeded by Michael DenDekker.

Lafayette died in 2016 at the age of 86 and is survived by his wife, Bertine Lafayette, three sons and nine grandchildren.

“I am pleased to co-name this street after Assemblyman Ivan Lafayette, a remarkable man who loved the community he represented in Albany for so many years,” said Council Member Danny Dromm.

“Lafayette was a great leader whose work had a tremendous impact on the community,” Dromm said. “He will forever be remembered as someone who had many schools built in the neighborhood when others thought it was impossible to do so.”
