A Woodside man was sentenced to nine years in prison today after pleading guilty to shooting his wife in March 2017, according to the Queens District Attorney.

Victor Guzman, a 55-year-old retired New York City corrections officer, pleaded guilty to first-degree assault earlier this month after admitting that he fired one round into his wife’s chest at their 59th Street/Laurel Hill Boulevard home.

Guzman’s wife survived, although she required treatment, since bullet fragments penetrated her spleen, stomach and adrenal glands.

The couple’s seven-year-old grandson was at their house at the time on the incident.

“The defendant’s actions in this case are reprehensible,” said Queens District Attorney Richard Brown in a statement. “He committed to love and protect his wife, but instead made her a victim of domestic violence.”
