College Point Collaborative, the neighborhood’s new and only middle school, will be hosting a scavenger hunt this Saturday Nov. 17. at 10 a.m. in order to show the community all the middle school has to offer.
The middle school’s current and past staff members planned the scavenger hunt which will focus on historical facts from the site, which was previously St. Fidelis Catholic School.
Back in 2017, QNS reported that residents petitioned to replace St. Fidelis with a middle school the same year the school closed. The Department of Education (DOE) gave the green light to move forward with the middle school in April of last year.
“We are working on building a legacy at M.S. 379 Queens and are excited about all the possibilities the new school has to offer,” wrote Principal Renee Kleger in an email to QNS.
Some of the things that College Point Collaborative has to offer include learning the ukulele with the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, ceramics with a resident artist from ArtistYear, classes with local Marine Biologist Dr. James Cervino, free after school with NY Edge, the CHAMPS Soccer after-school program, mural making classes, coding courses, STEM, Promethean Boards in all classrooms, and Family Fridays a once a month event where parents can join students in classrooms.
“This is our way of bringing our community together, and for the community to get a closer look at the newly renovated middle school,” Kleger said. The middle school’s open house will be Monday, Nov. 19, at 6:30 p.m.
College Point Collaborative will also be collecting canned food to donate to the St. Fidelis Food Pantry.
