The 40-year-old, off-duty police officer who was found with a gunshot wound to his head in Middle Village on Friday afternoon has died, it was reported.
Officers from the 104th Precinct responded to a 911 call about a man shot in the neighborhood at about 2:29 p.m. on Jan. 25. The New York Daily News reported that the officers went to a home in the vicinity of 69th Lane and Juniper Boulevard South; the NYPD declined to provide the specific location.
Upon arriving at the home, they found the wounded officer; based on a preliminary investigation, the officers believe the head wound was self-inflicted.
Paramedics rushed the cop to a local hospital, where he’s currently listed in critical condition. The Daily News reported on Saturday that the officer had succumbed to his injuries; he was identified by sources as Nicholas Mencaroni, 40, who joined the force in 2004 and was assigned to a Queens precinct.
The investigation is ongoing.
