A 22-year-old man was indicted on manslaughter charges Thursday for a deadly push that sent his elderly landlord flying down the front steps of a two-story Corona house last month.
Alex Garces was charged with first and second degree manslaughter and second degree assault, according to Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz today. He now faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
Garces allegedly shoved his landlord, 71-year-old Edgar Moncayo, down the front steps on Jan. 12 around 2:30 p.m., as Moncayo attempted to collect unpaid rent from Garces. The tenant initially claimed that Moncayo accidentally fell but police were able to review the incident that was caught on tape.
Police found Moncayo unconscious and unresponsive with head trauma lying on the pavement in front of the 102nd Street home. He was taken to NYC Health & Hospitals/Elmhurst and succumbed to his injuries the next day.
“This was a horrible incident captured on a Ring doorbell video,” said Katz in a statement. “The victim was pushed with so much force it propelled the 71-year-old man over the stairs and onto the pavement, where he struck his head and later died.”
