A 77-year-old was sentenced to two years in prison for sexually abusing two children who attended the daycare center his daughter ran, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced Thursday, Aug. 13.

Ramon Rodriguez, who lived in South Ozone Park, pleaded guilty to the abuse of a 7-year-old girl and a 5-year-old girl in January and will serve three years of post release supervision following his two year sentence. Rodriguez will also have to register as a sex offender, Katz said.

“In pleading guilty, the defendant admitted to violating these two young girls. Sadly, this defendant took advantage of his access to his daughter’s childcare business and befriended these vulnerable youngsters for his own depraved desires,” Katz said. “Parents must always be vigilant when choosing day care centers – ask questions and insist on knowing exactly who will have contact with your child.”

The crimes began in 2010, when Rodriguez began sexually abusing a 7-year-old girl who attended his daughter’s daycare, according to Katz. Rodriguez touched the girl underneath her clothing, exposed himself to her and forced her to touch him on multiple occasions, according to the charges.

The abuse lasted for five years, until the girl was 12 years old, Katz said.

Rodriguez also, on at least one occasion, sexually abused a 5-year-old girl sometime between June and July 2019, Katz said.

According to Katz, Rodriguez repeatedly apologized to his first victim for the abuse, prior to his arrest.

Rodriguez was sentenced by Queens Supreme Court Justice Karen Gopee.
