Queens Community Board 5 (CB 5) is calling on the city’s Department of Transportation  (DOT) to install a speed camera at the intersection of 69th Lane and Eliot Avenue near the Long Island Expressway (LIE) in Maspeth.

CB 5 District Manager Gary Giordano said that drivers often speed through the intersection.

“I don’t know many other streets in our neighborhoods where speeding is more likely than 69th Lane,” Giordano said during a recent board meeting.

Giordano believes that drivers tend to speed down 69th Lane trying to get to the LIE due to the lane adjacent 69th Street having “considerable traffic and too many signals.”

“The problem is that that street 69th Lane is being used by too many drivers to get to the Long Island Expressway going eastbound so they can avoid 69th Street,” Giordano said.

In a statement to QNS regarding the possibility of installing a speed camera at the intersection, a DOT spokesperson said the agency takes a “data-drive approach” to such requests.

“NYC DOT works every day to curb traffic fatalities through Vision Zero. We take a data-driven approach and prioritize speed camera installations where they’ll have the greatest impact on preventing injuries and deaths,” the spokesperson said.
