In their efforts to beautify the Jamaica Avenue corridor, The Woodhaven Business Improvement District (BID) will host a community cleanup event on Saturday, April 15, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
The BID is partnering with the city Department of Sanitation (DSNY), Community Board 9 and the Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association (WRBA) for the event. Volunteers will meet at 10 a.m. in front of the Dunkin’ located at 92-17 Jamaica Ave. and will finish at Forest Parkway at 11:30 a.m.
John Perricone, executive director of the Woodhaven BID, said he hopes to have at least 20 volunteers at the event. Volunteers will be equipped with brooms to pick up any litter on the streets and will fill garbage bags that will be picked up by DSNY.
“This will be the first cleanup event since I became executive director in December 2022,” Perricone said. “We hope to plan another cleanup during the summer. In the past, the Woodhaven BID coordinated numerous cleanups.”
A common problem along the highly-trafficked commercial corridor is accumulation of litter on the streets, according to Perricone.
“However, we have an active community who prides itself on pitching in. Furthermore, DSNY is a great partner in making sure garbage is picked up, and our BID does provide seven day supplemental sanitation services,” Perricone said.
Perricone hailed Woodhaven residents for coming together to beautify the area and helping to keep it clean.
“We have the benefit of having great elected officials who always lend a hand, along with Community Board 9 and civic organizations,” Perricone said. “The residents of Woodhaven also understand the importance of keeping Jamaica avenue clean, which directly benefits our business owners, commuters on the subway and patrons alike.”
