As we prepare to celebrate the new year, there are still plenty of things to do this weekend in Queens before the year wraps up. From social events to fun classes, there is a lot to look forward to this weekend.
Friday, Dec. 29
NYC Parks will shine a spotlight on and celebrate the artistic creations of their afterschool youth program participants. There will be several fun activities available, including button making, 3D models, glitter tattoos, alebrije postcards, watercolor paintings and stop motion animation. Public Speaking and Debate Workshop
Lumos Debate will be holding a workshop for public speaking and debating. Kids between the ages of 8 and 14 will learn valuable skills in these areas. NYRR Open Run at Baisley Pond Park
The New York Road Runners will be hosting a community-led 5K at Baisley Pond Park for walkers and runners of all ages, abilities and experience levels. (Baisley Pond Park, Baisley Boulevard, Jamaica. 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Admission: Free)
Beginner Salsa and Bachata Classes
Learn how to perform the Latin dance styles known as Salsa and Bachala. (Nieves Latin Dance Studio: Astoria, 33-19 Crescent St., Astoria. 4 p.m. for Salsa and 5 p.m. for Bachata. Admission: $75-$120 per membership)
Sunday, Dec. 31
Come to Queens Movement Studios and celebrate the new year with a balloon drop, dancing, games, arts and crafts and more. (Queens Movement Studios, 61-19 Fresh Pond Rd., Middle Village. 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Admission: $40)
Those with an interest in the outdoors are encouraged to take part in this five-round trivia game. Questions relate to a variety of topics, including history, science, nature and local pop culture.
