The king of dancehall is coming to Queens. Sean Paul, a prominent Jamaican dancehall singer, rapper and DJ, will headline a concert as part of the Rise Up NYC concert series on Saturday, Aug. 24.

The free concert will be held at Roy Wilkins Park, located on Merrick Boulevard in St. Albans. Doors open at 5 p.m., and showtime is at 6 p.m. The global dancehall artist will receive an entertainment key in his honor during the performance.

Sean Paul first found his love for music at the age of 21. Coming from a gifted family of swimmers, he swapped the sea for land and began to hone his musical skills at open mic nights in Kingston, Jamaica. In 1994, he joined the “Dutty Cup Crew” and released his first solo song, “Baby Girl” in 1994. By 2000, he released his debut album, “Stage One,” but his sophomore studio album, “Dutty Rock,” was his claim to fame. The 22-track project earned multiplatinum certification, and he solidified his place in global music when the album won a Grammy for  “Best Reggae Album.”

The dancehall icon is known for his chart-topping songs such as “Gimme The Light,” “Like Glue,” “I’m Still In Love With You” and “Get Busy.” Get Busy was his first solo No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

Rise Up NYC was created to bring New Yorkers together to celebrate music, culture and community. The organization offers free access to high-quality concerts of all genres of music, including hip-hop, jazz, Latin and classical. Past performers have included critically acclaimed artists like Chrisette Michele, Maxi Priest, Mary Mary, Ja Rule, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico and Wyclef Jean.
