Saved by the bell: Free back-to-school giveaways for Southeast Queens residents

As the back-to-school season approaches, numerous local organizations in southeastern Queens are hosting giveaway events for residents across the borough. These events will provide essential school supplies such as scissors, binders, craft materials, bookbags and notebooks. Below is a list of events for students.

Back To School Pop Up Shop

Organizer: Shelly Love

Date: Saturday, Aug. 10

Time: 3-8 p.m.

Location: Only Rare NYC- 229-13 Merrick Blvd., Laurelton

Free school supplies will be given away, with local vendors to shop and support.

Back 2 School Supply Giveaway + Health and Wellness Fair

Organizer: Grayson Street Christian Assembly

Date: Saturday, Aug. 10

Time: 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

Location: 188-04 Nashville Blvd., Jamaica

Free backpacks filled with school supplies (notebooks, binders, pens, pencils, markers, crayons, highlighters, erasers, rulers, scissors and glue sticks) while supplies last. Children must be present to receive supplies.

Annual Back To School Giveaway

Organizer: Community Church of Christ

Date: Saturday, Aug. 24

Time: noon-5 p.m.* or until supplies last

Location: 167-04 108th Ave., Jamaica

Free book bag giveaway and community BBQ. Family-friendly activities include face painting, music and food. A child must be present to receive a book bag.

Backpacking for the Community

Organizer: A Vision To Empower

Date: Saturday, Aug. 24

Time: noon-4 p.m.

Location: I.S. 59 schoolyard- entrance on Springfield Boulevard and Lucas Street, Springfield Gardens

Free book bags filled with school supplies will be available for children to take home. Parents must be accompanied by a child to receive supplies.

Back to School Block Party and Giveaway

Organizer: Council Member Nantasha Williams

Date: Sunday, Aug. 25

Time: 1-5 p.m.

Location: 172-12 Linden Blvd., Jamaica

Free backpacks for all young students, free food and live music.

D29 Homecoming Parade and Festival

Date: Saturday, Sep. 14

Line Up Time: 9:15 a.m. at P.S. 132Q

Festival Site: I.S. 59 – 132-55 Ridgedale St., Springfield Gardens

Free school supplies, parade, school performances and games.
