Episcopal Health Services (EHS) is expanding its efforts to address food insecurity in Far Rockaway through its third year of participation in the Health Bucks program while also providing free health screenings and nutritional counseling at local farmers markets.
This initiative, led by the EHS Population Health team, is part of the health system’s broader mission to promote healthy eating habits and improve community health outcomes.
The Health Bucks program, supported by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, offers $2 coupons that can be redeemed at local farmers markets for fresh fruits and vegetables. Residents using SNAP on an EBT card can receive up to $10 in Health Bucks daily, an incentive designed to encourage healthier food choices and provide access to nutritious options.
“The purpose of this program is to address food insecurity and encourage healthier food choices,” said Preet Kukreja, MBA, MHA, FAPM, Director of Population Health at EHS. “This is a vital component of improving overall health outcomes.”
The team also offers A1C screenings, food demonstrations and nutritional counseling at local farmers markets, combining these services to educate the community on the importance of balanced nutrition while ensuring access to fresh, healthy food.
“We understand the critical relationship between social determinants and physical health,” said Renee Hastick-Motes, Senior Vice President and Chief External Affairs Officer at EHS. “At EHS, we are committed to delivering comprehensive healthcare to the communities we serve, and we are excited that Health Bucks is an added resource.”
EHS also partners with The Campaign Against Hunger to offer fresh food giveaways every Thursday at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, located at 327 Beach 19th St.
“These initiatives are part of our broader mission to ensure the community has access to resources that will improve overall health outcomes,” Hastick-Motes added.
